I can’t believe it has been a month since my professional development session at Together Digital‘s 2019 National Conference. Together Digital is a professional organization with over 2K women across the nation with the mission to help women advance in their digital careers. We believe in the idea of Asks and Gives, encouraging people to ask for help when it’s uncomfortable and give to others so that we can advance in our lives and careers. I’m the City Champ for the Austin chapter where I lead our board’s goals, planning and execution with a focus on recruiting more amazing womxn into our chapter and keeping them happy and growing.
Alaina Shearer founded the organization a few years ago, and encouraged me to tell my story at our national conference last month in Columbus. This was an ask and I gave my heart. I’ve had quite a journey over the last few years and her encouragement pushed me to get vulnerable and real with our ladybosses to hopefully help them navigate their own personal and professional journey especially with corporate life.
I have to be honest. I was quite nervous for my session. I do plenty of speaking and presenting but something about being in front of my ladybosses and telling a story I never have told was very uncomfortable. I had just listened to some incredible sessions from Cindy Davis at L Brands, Jaqi Saleem at Qualified, Jacee Scoular at Hollister to name a few. You have no idea how good it felt to have a packed room, with people standing and sitting on the floor!
In my effort to continuing being vulnerable, I’m sharing the presentation’s 7 key lessons from each of my life’s chapters, in a book that is still being written:
- If you don’t try, you’ll never get what you want
- Your community is everything
- Be alone, get uncomfortable, have no regrets
- Play to your strengths
- You are your brand | Work to live, not live to work.
- Trust your path. Trust the universe. Carry on.
- What got you here, won’t get you there.
Crushing corporate and having a life to me = Passion + Skills + Purpose
It’s that feeling when you’re in constant flow. Where you feel like, YES, this is what I’ve been waiting to do. I’m appreciated. I’m challenged. I’m learning. I’m growing. I’m having fun.
Be patient. Be clear on who you are, what your strengths are, and how you want to feel and contribute.
ALWAYS remember, your brand is everything. So make it a good one.
