In a creator economy, which type of creator are you?

When we look at creator stories throughout history one thing stands out – people are always coming up with new ideas and ways of thinking that have never been done before! If you want to be part of the creator economy yourself, that’s something you will have to accept and recognize if you want to get anywhere with your own creator story. As a creator, it doesn’t matter how you get your idea to work; it just matters that you come up with a creator story people can relate to.

LinkedIn has released figures which show that the creator economy is expected to represent 10% of the US workforce by 2022. In addition, creator industry job growth has outpaced traditional jobs at a rate of 1.5x from 2012 to 2017.

Creator occupations are expected to grow by 25% over the next 5 years, compared to projected employment increases for all occupations of 7%. The creator economy on LinkedIn is shaping how people are working and the types of skills they need today and in the future.

The creator economy also allows people to be independent workers, operating as their own boss but wanting access to the opportunities that come with being part of a community or network. This trend is likely to continue due to Millennials’ attitudes towards building and leveraging relationships for a purpose. For these Millennials collaboration provides more value than competition. Based on this dynamic, companies, and to be worth $1.2tn annually*. The creator economy broadly refers to people using their skills or expertise to create products, services or experiences for others** and will account for 39 million jobs in the US alone***.

This growth is being driven by factors such as an increase in freelancing (a key creator economy model), rising wages among millennials (the generation with highest anticipated creator economy participation)*****, changing attitudes towards entrepreneurship and self-employment, changes in technology capabilities and societal shift towards valuing creativity over financial security. This evolution of careers is further supported by large companies investing more time and resources into ensuring that their employees are fully engaged with their employers through ongoing personal as well as professional development.

In just a few years, LinkedIn has become the leading destination where professionals connect and collaborate together to grow careers, get jobs and grow businesses.
